Why you need your friends to smell you.

It happens to everyone: Over time, your nose gets used to the smell of your living space and your own body.

Your sense of smell gets habituated to the environment you’re in. And it becomes “the norm,” without you even realizing it.

Of course, you can still sense pungent smells, like a funky garbage bag that needs to be taken out, or rank-smelling socks after the gym, or spoiled milk.

But by and large, it’s hard to truly tell how your apartment and even your own body generally smells like.

I should know…

I have two cats, and it wasn’t until my friend came over and mentioned my apartment smells a little funky — mostly because of the cat’s litter — that I came to this realization.

Similarly, my mom recently mentioned my winter coat smelled off — probably from my sweat — and I didn’t even realize it.

This is why it’s important to have trusted friends or family smell you and give you honest feedback.

You need someone who won’t tell you what you want to hear. A trusted friend, family member, confidante, friendly neighbor, romantic partner.
