I get that question a lot this time of year. And for some reason, I always get caught off guard, stumbling my way through some kind of answer.
“Uh… well… My family’s not Christian, but we’re not really religious in general… so… we kinda celebrate Christmas??? But, like, we don’t do the tree or the gifts, just a nice dinner. So it’s sorrrta Christmas, I guess?”
To be very honest with you, I don’t really know what my family and I celebrate. Over the years, we’ve kind of just made it our own thing. Like Festivus was to Frank Costanza, our family’s celebration has taken on a definition of its own. (Except with less airing of grievances).
Don’t get me wrong, my family LOVES everything about the holidays. The lights, the Christmas trees, Mariah Carey, all that shit.
But we don’t do a lot of the traditional things people do for Christmas. There’s no Christmas tree at our house. There’s no gift wishlist. And growing up, there never was a Santa to leave milk and cookies out for.
