Ellie this post really resonated with me. I think it’s totally natural to feel that internal “conflict” about your two selves. Especially when you poured so much into your medical path and had that all planned out. Of course you’d miss that part of you! It was a huge part of your identity!

But like other great responses here, I’d agree to go with the flow and see where life takes you. As long as it’s affording you the kind of fulfillment and quality of life you want. I love the comment that you could use your knowledge to work on a medical show. So true! There are a lot of ways to still incorporate that medical part of you into your new path.

I spent 4 agonizing years studying my ass off at the top economics school in the country, only to have a similar opportunity present itself to me. I was all set to do economics-y things with my life, and then took a detour into comedy and media. And yeah, I had a lot of the same feelings you’re having. I still do!!! But a lot of the time I like to incorporate my Econ knowledge into comedy stuff and at my job. So it’s a nice mix. Weird how things work out in the end.

As usual, love your writing. Keep us all posted on things!
